The New MoMA Thematic Tour:

a Game-based Mobile Learning Experience

Field Observation

We visited the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City in person to find out if there are any issues related to museum education.

Problem Statement

Based on what we have observed in MoMA and discovered young adults' needs and pain points through focus group discussion, we formed the problem statement:

Target Audiences: Why Young Adults?

- Free admission to museums if enrolled in college

- More interested in art than previous generations

- Familiar with mobile technologies

From the journey map, we decided to target three potential opportunities for museum education:

1. Customized journey

2. Thematic design

3. Gamified learning

Key Features

So, we redesigned MoMA's website by adding gamified thematic tours in it. For this project, we focused on "The Significance Tour", which highlighted most famous artworks in MoMA.

1) Game-based Learning

In each thematic tour, we introduce a unique storyline for visitors to participate in and roleplay in the art experience with more engagement.

2) Situated Learning

Situated Learning emphasizes learning through participation in the social world under proper context, which positively relates to the learning process. For our project, people can only play with it by visiting MoMA in person.

3) Personalized Learning

At the beginning of this experience, we will let the visitors choose the theme they want to explore and how much time they have today.

4) Transform Museum Education Pedagogies

When designing the activities in each tour, we reference both Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) and inquiry-based teaching and transform these pedagogies into digital forms.

5) Promote Socialization

We add social elements like community sharing, real-time interaction, and social media functions in our design.

6) Constructivism

We hope to help visitors to construct their own meaning through open-ended discussion and non-discursive activities, to build cultural and social connections, empathy, and other skills. We think the museum experience is more sustainable and meaningful in this way.
